Today I’m answering the question “How do I use dies in my card making”. Lots of new crafters don’t know about die cutting and all the possibilities it can add to enhance your card projects. Some crafters ONLY use dies with just a few words on their cards. For me the best thing about Stampin’ Up! is how they bring it all together.  Stamping, obviously, but also creating dies specifically to coordinate with their stamps.  This raises your game to a whole new level! You will need a Big Shot or alternative die cutting machine to use any of these, so it is a considered purchase, but if you’re serious about crafting it’s so worth it!

Let’s break it down a bit. You have 3 basic types of dies. Framelits (frame an image or create a shape), thinlits (detailed designs or images) and Edgelits (these create an edge, normally with a design on).

How do I use dies in my card making?

In this card I use both Framelits (specifically the Stitched Shapes Framelits) to create the circles. Then stamping the A Little Wild bear image I can use the matching Little Loves Framelits to cut out a perfect bear. In fact the bear is a tag, and I’ve only used one half of him! So this set of stamps and dies can make tags or cards!

Some dies are designed to be the focal point on a card, like the Lovely Words Thinlits used here to create the “friend” topper.

The Lovely is the same, you can choose to leave it cut out of the centre of a piece of card stock like this too. Dies are so versatile they give you so many other design options.

Edgelits give you something else to play with! Either a decorative edge or designs that you can use to build up a card front with! Plus it has a tag topper element too.

We’ve not even talked about how Thinlits can help you make 3D projects (bags, boxes etc) quickly, but that’s a whole other blog post since this was about “how do I use dies in my card making”!

Framelits, Thinlits and Edgelits are now an integral part of my card making. They are so on trend, and most crafters use to them to one extent or another in their designing. Why wouldn’t you?
